Kinship DNA test
A DNA Kinship test looks at how likely it is that a genetic relationship exists between two or more people by looking at the amount of DNA they have in common. Kinship testing performed by Identilab can determine the following biological relationships:
- Half siblings
It is important to note that this type of testing will not provide you with a yes or no answer regarding whether the tested people are related or not. Instead, the results will say if it is likely. There are three possible outcomes of kinship testing at Identilab:
- We find support for the tested relationship, that is, it is likely that the tested people are related.
- The results are inconclusive, that is, we didn’t find evidence for or against the tested relationship. This means we cannot confidently state whether any DNA that is shared between the two individuals is because they are related, or because those DNA markers are common in the general population and are shared by chance.
- We find no support for the tested relationship, that is, it is unlikely that the tested people are related.
We also offer Y-STR testing, which can be useful in determining if two or more males come from the same paternal line. Most often, this test is used when two males want to know if they have the same father but he is not available for testing. Other types of kinship relationships between males can also be tested, such as testing a paternal grandfather against a grandson.
Samples for kinship tests can be collected either at home (for results that are for your peace of mind and personal knowledge only) or by a medical professional (for results that can be used for legal purposes).
There are 3 easy steps to
find out if two or more
people are related:
Contact us by phone, email, or through our contact form to have a test customised to suit your specific situation. We’ll send your collection kits that day if ordered by 12pm on a weekday (Brisbane time). Orders received on a weekend or after 12pm on a weekday will be sent the next business day. Kits are sent in discreet packaging via Australia Post for free, or there is an Express Post option for an additional fee.
Your collection kit includes full instructions on how to take your samples yourself (for at home testing) or have them collected by your chosen medical professional (for legally admissible testing) – it’s just a quick and easy swab from inside the mouth. Package the samples in the supplied pre-paid return envelope and drop them back in the post. If you are located in Brisbane, and undertaking the legally admissible test, we can collect your samples in our office at no charge.
Once we have all your samples at the lab, we’ll perform our testing as quickly as possible. You’ll receive your results via email within 5 business days of us receiving your samples (providing the samples are of good quality and additional testing is not required).
