Understanding Zygosity: Identilab’s Collaboration with Twins Research Australia

At Identilab, we are proud to partner with Twins Research Australia (TRA) to offer accurate and accessible zygosity testing for twins and their families. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to advancing twin research and providing individuals with valuable insights into their genetic relationships.

What Is Zygosity and Why Does It Matter?

Zygosity refers to whether twins are monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal). Identical twins originate from a single fertilised egg that splits, resulting in nearly identical genetic profiles. Fraternal twins develop from two separate eggs fertilised by different sperm, sharing about 50% of their DNA, similar to typical siblings.

Determining zygosity is important for several reasons:

  • Medical Insight: Identical twins may have higher concordance rates for certain genetic conditions. Knowing zygosity can inform healthcare decisions and risk assessments.
  • Personal Understanding: Clarifying whether twins are identical or fraternal can enhance personal identity and family dynamics.
  • Research Participation: Accurate zygosity information is crucial for twins participating in scientific studies, ensuring the validity of research findings.

One of our recent customers shared:

“Incredible, thank you! For 42 years we thought we were non-identical—so this is quite an update!”

About Twins Research Australia

Twins Research Australia is a national not-for-profit organisation that connects twins with researchers to explore health and developmental questions. With a community of over 75,000 twin members, TRA facilitates studies that leverage the unique genetic makeup of twins to advance our understanding of various health conditions.

Identilab’s Role in Zygosity Testing

Identilab is an Australian-owned and operated laboratory specialising in DNA testing services. Our zygosity testing process is straightforward and non-invasive:

  • Sample Collection: We provide at-home kits with detailed instructions for collecting cheek swab samples from each twin (or triplet!).
  • Laboratory Analysis: Upon receiving the samples, our laboratory analyses 23 DNA markers to determine zygosity with high accuracy.
  • Results Delivery: Results are typically available within five business days and are delivered via email.

Our services are designed for personal knowledge and are not intended for legal purposes.

Special Offer for TRA Members

As part of our collaboration with Twins Research Australia, TRA members are eligible for a discounted rate on our zygosity testing services. Members can obtain a unique discount code by contacting TRA directly at [email protected].
